Weight Plates
Weight lifting equipments come in various shapes, types and sizes, and weight plates are one such type. They are used to add resistance to adjustable barbells, dumbbells and plate-loaded weight machines. Depending on the purpose and price of the weight plates they are constructed from steel, cast iron and cement-filled plastic. Available in small size weighing 0.45kg to larger size weighing as much as 45kg, weight plates are round or octagonal, with a central hole to fit a standard or Olympic barbell.
Standard weight plates are round and manufactured from cast iron, or steel with a soft rubber coating, are light-weight and fits smaller commercial barbells and home gym equipment, therefore an excellent choice for new weight lifters. Alternatively, for seasoned weight lifters weight plates made of plastic casing filled with cement is an economical option. However, these are less resistant to wear and tear, and tend to get misbalanced easily if not checked on the weight scales prior to using.
Typically Olympic weight plates are created from cast iron. However, few are coated with rubber to protect the weight plates and the gym floor from possible damage. These plates are used by power lifters, body builders and athletes.
Technique plates are Olympic-sized weight plates used for training purposes. These are manufactured from plastic, aluminum and similar light-weight yet strong materials. Designed to fit Olympic barbells, these are lighter than standard Olympic plates, and are highly durable to withstand pressure and dropping accidents. Widely used in high school gyms, where safety and durability are priority concerns, but can be used by competitive adult power lifters as well. Technique plates are used to allow athletes practice form and movement with proportioned barbell, without requiring full training load.
Weight plates workouts stresses on shoulder, arms and upper torso. It exclusively builds the muscles around these areas, while toning the complete body. However, care should be taken for body posture and pace to avoid injuries.
